The paper describes Russia’s first experience with women, compassionate widows, who were engaged in taking care of the wounded soldiers of the Russian Army during hostilities. It gives information on the history of setting up an institution for compassionate widows and their activities during the heroic defense of Sebastopol in the Crimean War.
