At present, there are above 200 viruses causing acute respiratory viral infection; however, the epidemic spread is primarily characteristic of human influenza viruses types A and B. The paper describes the structure of influenza viruses, their characteristics and spread. Particular emphasis is laid on avian influenza, the clinical picture and treatment of avian influenza in man.
